A 4-star road journey across the full altitude range of the western Himalaya — from Leh's cold desert to the sand dunes of Nubra Valley, the surreal Lamayuru Moonland, the Kargil War Memorial at Drass, and a final night on a heritage houseboat on Dal Lake, Srinagar. The route is deliberately sequenced (Leh → Nubra → Kargil → Srinagar) for a safe, gradual altitude descent, rather than rushing the full 434 km Leh–Srinagar highway in one day.

Day-wise Itinerary

Arrival at Leh Airport
Kushok Bakula Rimpoche Airport, 3,500 m / 11,500 ft. Transfer to your 4-star hotel. Acclimatization is non-negotiable on Day 1 — rest, hydrate (3–4 litres of water), avoid alcohol and exertion, sleep early.

Leh Local Sightseeing
Hall of Fame Museum, Magnetic Hill, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Sangam Point (Indus–Zanskar confluence), Shanti Stupa at sunset, Leh Palace, and an evening at Leh Market for Pashmina and local crafts. Approx. 70–80 km, 3–4 hours.

Leh to Nubra Valley, via Khardung La
Cross Khardung La Pass (17,582 ft — 15-minute stop only, the air is thin) and descend into Nubra Valley's cold desert. Visit Diskit Monastery's giant Maitreya Buddha, the Hunder sand dunes, an optional Bactrian camel safari, and sunset over the dunes. Approx. 125 km, 5–6 hours.

Nubra Valley to Kargil, via Lamayuru
The most dramatic drive of the trip — Nubra → Leh → Basgo Fort → Alchi Monastery → Lamayuru Monastery and the Moonland → Namika La (3,720 m) → Fotu La (4,108 m, the highest point on the highway) → Mulbekh's 9-metre rock-carved Buddha → Kargil. Approx. 240 km, 8–9 hours — depart Nubra by 6:30 AM; mountain driving after dark is avoided entirely.

Kargil to Srinagar, via Drass & Sonamarg
Visit the Kargil War Memorial at Drass, cross the dramatic, partly-unpaved Zoji La Pass, and descend into the alpine meadows of Sonamarg. Arrive in Srinagar by evening for a Shikara ride on Dal Lake and a Kashmiri Wazwan dinner. Approx. 204 km, 6–7 hours.

Departure from Srinagar
A sunrise Shikara ride on Dal Lake, then — depending on flight time — a visit to the Mughal Gardens (Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh) before transfer to Srinagar airport.

Good to Know

●Altitude sickness risk is highest on Day 1 (Leh arrival) and Day 3 (Khardung La) — rest is non-negotiable on those days.
●Consult your doctor about Diamox (Acetazolamide) before travel, starting 2 days prior if prescribed.
●No alcohol until fully acclimatized (Day 3 at the earliest) — it significantly worsens altitude sickness.
●Never drive mountain roads at night — Khardung La, Zoji La, and the Kargil sections are especially dangerous after dark.
●Carry a postpaid SIM (Airtel, Jio, or BSNL) — prepaid SIMs from outside J&K do not work in the region.
●There is zero mobile connectivity between Khardung La and Khalsar, and on Zoji La Pass — download offline maps before departure.
●Pack warm layers even in July — temperatures can drop to 5°C at altitude — plus SPF 50+ sunscreen and UV sunglasses.
●Carry multiple copies of a valid government photo ID — required at checkposts throughout the route.

FAQs

Why not drive Leh to Srinagar directly in one day?

The full route is 434 km and can technically be driven in one long day, but that skips the gradual altitude descent that keeps AMS risk low. This itinerary is sequenced Leh → Nubra → Kargil → Srinagar specifically to maximize sightseeing while descending safely and gradually.
